Former Canberra Raider Troy Thompson appointed West Belconnen coach

It's where he first developed his passion for rugby league and former Canberra Raider Troy Thompson has earmarked restoring West Belconnen's history after signing on as head coach.

The joint Raiders player of the year in 2005, Thompson joins the Warriors after a one-year stint with Gungahlin, where he formed a coaching partnership with past Raiders David Howell and Lincoln Withers.

"It was a really tough decision. The [Gungahlin] Bulls have been awesome to me and I've met some great people, I just thought moving back to my home club was the right move," Thompson said.

Simon Woolford handed suspended sentence at Seiffert Oval broken window re-trial

Simon Woolford will coach the Queanbeyan Blues in round one of the 2016 Canberra Raiders Cup after his nine-month suspension for smashing a window at Seiffert Oval was overturned on Wednesday night.

Woolford was given a three-month suspended sentence, spanning between April and June to coincide with the start of the 2016 Canberra Raiders Cup season.

"I've copped a lot of flak over a nine-month suspension. There wasn't anyone in the rugby league world or normal world who thought that the punishment fit the crime," Woolford said.

Luke Berkrey and Shannon Rupapere have ended the transfer speculation by officially signing with Queanbeyan Blues.

The Canberra Raiders Cup back-to-back premiers were in the market for signings across the park after losing five marquee players to retirement.

Queanbeyan Blues bolster playing stocks

Canberra Raiders Cup champions the Queanbeyan Blues have turned to the Group 9 competition to bolster their playing stocks in a bid to achieve a premiership three-peat, WIN Canberra News reports. The Blues have secured the signatures of former Young Cherrypickers captain coach Luke Branighan and a couple of Cootamundra Bulldogs stars.

"I've had a lot of offers to go to clubs around NSW but a big part of it is I wanted to keep my job with the NRL. I've been doing that for four years and it's going well... and it's an opportunity to link up with a big club" 34 year old playmaker Branighan said.

Queanbeyan coach Simon Woolford played alongside Branighan at Young in 2012.

"It's one of the top teams in bush footy and Germ was pretty keen. He was chasing us for a couple of months and I just thought it would be good to take a step back and just have a year of playing" Branighan said.

"We've lost two of the most experienced players in the halves and it's important we replaced them with at least one experienced player, and Luke fits that, he's played NRL and he's played over in England" Simon Woolford said.

The Blues have also secured back rower Luke Berkrey and hooker Shannon Rupapere from Cootamundra.

"They'll come over once a week, obviously if it's a big game we will want them to come over twice, but we're relying on them to do the work over in Young and Cootamundra and I'm sure they will" Woolford said.

Sivo has struck a deal with NSW Cup club Mounties while Naseri will return to the Canberra Raiders Cup competition. After travelling down from Canberra each week, Naseri has elected to limit his travel this season. He previously played with West Belconnen but signed with Queanbeyan Blues.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos turn 50

One of the city's most successful sporting clubs will celebrate it's 50th birthday later this year, and the Queanbeyan Kangaroos history reflects a half century of ups and downs.

The club entered the second division Molonglo Shield in 1966, it's creation driven by the excess amount of rugby league players in Queanbeyan who could not consistenly make the cut for the Blues squad. Former Kangaroo president Denis Reid lauded the late Les McIntyre for his support of the fledgling club, and attributed much of it's success to the Queanbeyan Blues legend.

"He was the father of rugby league here, it was all Les McIntyre's idea to keep players in Queanbeyan rather than having them heading over the border and playing for the Canberra teams," Reid said.

"Les said that while the new club would weaken his club to a certain extent, the venture would be supported because it would be in the future interest of rugby league and the progress of rugby league in Queanbeyan."

Queanbeyan Blues turn to fresh faces in title defence

Defending their crown is sure to be on the minds of the premiership-winning players remaining with the Queanbeyan Blues for the 2016 season. But it will be a new-look side taking to the field in round one facing up against the Gungahlin Bulls and coach Simon Woolford thinks they are up to the tester.

“We have had quite a turnover of players, so in a way we have had to start from scratch but it’s gone pretty well. We have brought a couple of young guys in and some older heads too, so they have mixed in very well,” Woolford said

“There will be no excuses with us, we’re not going to get to mid-way through the year and say ‘It’s going to take time’, or ‘We’re rebuilding’. We have had a good pre-season and while we have lost a lot of quality players, we have brought some quality in and I think we’re ready to go.”

Yass Magpies ready to take flight in Canberra Raiders Cup return

Yass Magpies co-coach Steve Naughton says the club's return to the Canberra Raiders Cup fold is vital to keep the Bidgee region's best league talent in the game.

"We had to prove we could form three grades [under-19, reserve grade and A-grade] and that we'd be financially viable for the season and onwards," Naughton said.

"We've mainly got former players back who moved to other clubs while we've been in George Tooke.

Malu stars as Queanbeyan Blues start title defence strongly against Gungahlin

The Queanbeyan Blues have got their Canberra Raiders Cup title defence under way with a strong 34-16 win against the Gungahlin Bulls at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

Les McIntyre medallists ready to light it up for Roos in Queanbeyan derby

Their playmaking trio all have a Les McIntyre medal in their trophy cabinet but Queanbeyan Kangaroos half-back Jack Miller says a premiership is the only prize they're after.

After being named Canberra Raiders Cup player of the year last season, Englishman Miller signed with Queensland Cup side Norths Devils.

But after it didn't work out, the 21-year-old phoned Kangaroos player-coach Aaron Gorrell on the possibility of a return. Miller will link up with veteran five-eighth Brent Crisp, ajoint winner of the 2012 Les McIntyre Medal, in arguably the most potent halves combination in the competition.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Goulburn v West Belconnen at Goulburn Workers Arena (2pm); Tuggeranong v Gungahlin at Greenway (3pm), Woden Valley v Belconnen at Phillip Oval; Queanbeyan Blues v Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Seiffert Oval (3pm).

Roos and Blues to clash this weekend

Five of the last six Canberra Raiders Cup premierships have been won by a Queanbeyan club, and this weekend the Blues and the Kangaroos will contribute to a long line of quality league derbies when they face up at Seiffert Oval for local bragging rights.

The Blues began their title defence campaign successfully last Saturday with a strong 34 - 16 win over the Gungahlin Bulls at home, while the Roos landed a bye in round one and will be keen to blow out the cobwebs against their old foe.

"It was a normal first game of the season, we were made to do a lot of defence and they scored a couple of dive-over tries from dummy half which was frustrating, but it's always tough with that first game," Blues coach Simon Woolford said.

Younger players stepping up for Goulburn Bulldogs

GOULBURN Workers Bulldogs First Grade have brought home the first points for the club this season in their opening game against Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

“Involvement by the young players on the team was the key to the success,” President Joe Stephens said.

“The young guys showed plenty of commitment and were keen to get involved and look for opportunities. With Mick Picker leading the way for the team Chris Hart at Fullback and Tyson Greenwood played well and made a real difference in bringing the ball forward.”

Yass Magpies draw good support in return to Canberra Raiders Cup

After a three-year absence from the top flight Canberra Raiders Cup, the Yass Magpies showed character but were ultimately outgunned by a solid Woden Rams outfit 36-18 in the season opener.

Played in front of a big home crowd on Saturday, the Magpies put in plenty of effort but lacked the finesse to match it with their Canberra rivals.

A poor completion rate in the first half didn’t help their cause but it was the speed around the play-the-ball of the Rams that was the difference between the two sides.

USARL former opponents in National Championship become teammates with Yass Magpies

“It all happened so fast!” exclaimed Atlanta Rhinos rugby league center, Terrance Williams, sharing his excitement about signing his first semi-professional contract to play rugby league in Australia with the Yass Magpies in Canberra.

Curtis Goddard, who also signed on with the Magpies. recommended Williams to Magpies Coach Steven Naughton, when the team was in need of a center this season. Goddard has both played against Williams in USARL 2015 National Championship opponent (Boston 13s), and alongside each other for the USA in last years Colonial Cup against Canada.

Williams was initially suggested to the Magpies by former Yass Magpie and Atlanta Rhinos coach, Jordan Smedley last year, but they weren’t in a position to bring him over at that stage. Through Goddard’s recommendation, plus Naughton’s additional communication Smedley, everything came together for Williams very quickly. Unlike most contract negotiations Williams found himself on an airplane and headed to Canberra in a mere 3 weeks from the initial contact from Goddard about the idea.

Ruthless Queanbeyan Blues smash cross-town rivals Roos 56-0 in early statement

Ruthless, clinical, slick and composed. Many adjectives could describe the Queanbeyan Blues' 56-0 thrashing of cross-town rivals the Roos, proving they're still the team to beat in their quest for a third straight Canberra Raiders Cup title.

"It was extremely pleasing, in our trials and the one comp game [34-16 win over Gungahlin] our completions were really ordinary," Luke Branighan said.

In other matches on Saturday Woden Valley won their second straight game to start the year 42-18 over Belconnen at Phillip Oval, West Belconnen also improved to 2-0 by beating last year's grand finalists Goulburn 32-20 on the road, and Gungahlin thrashed Tuggeranong 46-12.

Queanbeyan Roos desperate to bounce back from derby thrashing against Warriors

They're coming off one of the biggest Queanbeyan derby losses in their history, but West Belconnen Warriors coach Troy Thompson expects the Kangaroos' 56-0 defeat to the Blues will only make their job tougher on Sunday.

"Most definitely [it will make them harder to beat], they haven't played much footy, the Roos," Thompson said. "I know they got stuffed around in a couple of trial games so they're probably a bit underdone.

In Saturday's games, Yass secured their first win in their return to the top flight with a 26-24 defeat of Goulburn, while the Blues maintained their unbeaten start by accounting for Tuggeranong, 34-24.
