Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen Warriors Bobby Roberts wins Les McIntyre Medal

You could be forgiven for thinking West Belconnen's Robert Roberts is a bench forward in the N 21 jumper, but in actual fact he is the 2016 Les McIntyre Medallist playing five-eighth.

Roberts claimed 23 points to win the top gong, eight clear of Queanbeyan Kangaroos five-eighth Brent Crisp (15) with Goulburn's Ben Picker (13) rounding out the top three.

As for wearing the No. 21 jumper every week, West Belconnen coach Troy Thompson laughs that the No. 6 just doesn't fit him.

What's the Club Championship?

When all the competition points across all the grades are added up, weighted more to the higher grades, you get a club championship table. So it shows which is the strongest club, taking into account all the grades.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 1 Preview

Image

The finals are here and it will be the end of the road for one club. In the elimination final, the third placed West Belconnen Warriors take on the fourth placed Gungahlin Bulls on Saturday at Raiders Belconnen.

The Bulls suffered a 24-4 defeat at the hands of the first placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Gungahlin last Friday night, in pelting rain and driving winds.

The Bulls have made huge progress this season, with coaches David Howell and Lincoln Withers named Coaches of the Year at the McIntyre Medal this week. But it will be tough for them to beat the Warriors at their home ground.

The Warriors showed they were in good touch in their last outing, defeating the Yass Magpies 44-6, also in difficult weather conditions. Bobby Roberts showed why he has been named the McIntyre Medallist for 2016, and was in great goal kicking form to boot.

The coaching battle features three former Raiders - with Troy Thompson at the helm of the Warriors.

Which ever team loses, it is the end of 2016.

Then on Sunday, it is a local derby at Freebody Oval: Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Queanbeyan Blues.

The Roos have lost just once all season... in Round 2... to the Queanbeyan Blues. The Blues, however, fell away in the middle of the season, while the Roos powered on, earning a home final.

The Blues have come back into form in recent weeks, recording a 46-6 win over the Goulburn Bulldogs last weekend at Seiffert Oval.

Both Queanbeyan coaches - Aaron Gorrell and Simon Woolford - have suited up and played this season, Gorrell just last week. Gorrell has again been named this week, but Woolford is on the sidelines. It'll be another big coaching battle between former NRL hookers.

The winner qualifies for the Grand Final. The loser will still have a second bite at the cherry.

The Greenhouse will at Brookvale Oval on Saturday, but will be at Freebody on Sunday for the Queanbeyan clash. We'll have live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter, and half and full time scores in this thread. Plus we will have the results for Saturday's match as soon as they come to hand.

Saturday 27 August 3:15pm
West Belconnen Warriors V Gungahlin Bulls, Raiders Belconnen

Sunday 28 August 3:15pm

Canberra Raiders Cup: Ex-NRL stars trade boots for a clipboard in the finals

A coaching group boasting more than 1000 games of top-grade experience is set to begin its finals charge with the Canberra Raiders Cup at stake.

On Saturday it's former Raiders and Storm forward Troy Thompson guiding West Belconnen into a sudden-death semi-final against Lincoln Withers and David Howell's Gungahlin Bulls. On Sunday Simon Woolford's Queanbeyan Blues will look to move into a fourth consecutive grand final against Aaron Gorrell's Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freebody Oval.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell says his team must lift against Blues

Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell believes his side needs to perform better than their best this weekend, in the major semi-final against the Blues this Sunday.

“They’ve obviously been the dominant team over the last two years. They’ve won the last two competitions, and we beat them in the one before that,” Gorrell said.

“They’re shooting for their fourth straight grand final. For any team at any level to do that, it’s a fair achievement. We need to be at our best and maybe a little bit more.”

Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen beat Gungahlin Bulls 22-16

The Canberra Raiders Cup elimination final was decided by goal kicking Saturday afternoon as West Belconnen edged out the Gungahlin Bulls 22-16. Bobby Roberts' three goals to the Bulls' zero ensured his side would advance to the second week of the finals.

"That was one of our worst performances, to be honest," Warriors coach Troy Thompson said. "Bulls played really good footy, they played structure, they probably completed 90 per cent of the sets. We didn't, we kept turning the ball over but they [West Belconnen] stuck in and got the win.

West Belconnen Warriors 22 (R McQueen 2, S Finnegan, A Greenwood tries; R Roberts 3 goals) bt Gungahlin Bulls 16 (B Hill, D Low, R O'Sullivan, M Sollis tries).

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Kangaroos through to grand final with win over Blues

Queanbeyan Kangaroos have sent an emphatic message to the rest of the Raiders Cup premiership hopefuls with a well-constructed victory over their crosstown foes the Queanbeyan Blues. They now move to the Grand Final, while the Blues meet the Warriors next week.

"We can't get too carried away, we've done everything we've needed to, but come a fortnight's time it all means nothing. It comes down to 80-plus minutes and we know they're going to be better for that if it's them or Westies," Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell said.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 32 (B Crisp, B Cronan, S Dunn, J Pearce, T Whiley tries; B Crisp 6 goals) bt Queanbeyan Blues 12 (J Lenihan, T Stevens, tries; L Berkrey 2 goals).

Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 2 Preview

Image

We now know one Canberra Raiders Cup grand finalist, and this week, the other is decided.

Last weekend in the qualifying final, at Freebody Oval, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos marched on, defeating the Queanbeyan Blues 32-12. The Roos never really looked in danger of defeat, extending their winning streak to 16.

The Blues went to a 6-0 lead after 19 minutes, courtesy of a penalty goal and then a try in the corner to winger Jarrod Lenihan. But the Roos fought back with two tries, the second to Brent Crisp try in the 37th minute, giving the home team a 12-6 lead at the break.

The Roos went out to an 18-6 early in the second half, but a try to the Blues' Tyler Stevens in the 57th minute brought the cross town rivals back into the game. The Blues trailed by six, but the Kangaroos piled on three tries in the final 20 minutes to secure a convincing win.

After the match, Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell said: "We can't get too carried away, we've done everything we've needed to, but come a fortnight's time it all means nothing. It comes down to 80-plus minutes."

The Kangaroos now have the week off. To win the Grand Final, they will need to have won 17 in a row, but given their form, who's to say they cannot do it?

In the elimination final on Saturday, the West Belconnen Warriors knocked out the Gungahlin Bulls with a 22-16 victory. The goal kicking of Les McIntyre Medallist Bobby Roberts proved the difference, with both teams scoring four tries.

“That was one of our worst performances, to be honest," Warriors coach Troy Thompson said after the match. "The Bulls played really good footy, they played structure, they probably completed 90 per cent of the sets. We didn't, we kept turning the ball over but the team stuck in and got the win."

So the Warriors advance and meet the Queanbeyan Blues at Seiffert Oval this Sunday in the preliminary final. Given the form of the teams, it may well be another Queanbeyan derby on Grand Final day.

In the coaches' boxes it is a battle between former Raiders Simon Woolford and Troy Thompson. And on the field there's a mix of former Raiders and up and coming Raiders... like Trevor Thurling, Mark Appleton, Connor Brebner and Harry Whatman.

The preliminary final unfortunately clashes with the Canberra Raiders match against the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval. It would have been sensible to show some flexibility in the schedule and stage the matches on Saturday afternoon... but that isn't to be.

The Greenhouse will be at Leichhardt, but @CanberraCup will have full time scores from Seiffert. If you're at the match, give the local competition a boost and tweet the scores! And tweet your pics from the game! Add in @CanberraCup to your tweets and we will do our best to re-tweet them!

Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen Leu Saipani in finals charge after return home

Early last year Leu Saipani went back to Samoa for three months, teaching schoolchildren how to play rugby. Fast forward a year and he is gearing up for a preliminary final with his new side, West Belconnen.

"They're running around in barefeet, and don't have much," Saipani said of the Samoan children he visited. "I took about two suitcases full of all of my old Brumbies and Raiders junior stuff. I took all that over there, handed it out to my family and the kids out there in my village.

Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen Warriors book place in the decider with Blues defeat

A West Belconnen 10-6 victory in the Canberra Raiders Cup preliminary final ended the Queanbeyan Blues' three-peat ambitions and with it any dreams of a grand final local derby.

"The game was probably there for the taking for both sides. [It was] a real good effort from the boys, they just keep turning up in defence but we just keep turning the ball over. If we can hold the footy and play some good structure, I think we'll be a chance [in the grand final]," Troy Thompson said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Grand Final

Image

There's not just one big rugby league match in Canberra this weekend! The Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final takes place this Sunday, between the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and West Belconnen Warriors at Queanbeyan's Seiffert Oval.

The Kangaroos have had a two week break, qualifying first for the decider, with a decisive 32-12 win over the Queanbeyan Blues at Freebody Oval. They have not lost a match since Round 2 this season and are on a 16 game winning streak. The minor premiers will need to win 17 in a row, but will start clear favourites in the match.

The West Belconnen Warriors finished the regular season in third, but last week overcame the Queanbeyan Blues in the preliminary final on the Blue's own home ground. The grinding 10-6 victory put an end to the Blues' hopes of a three-peat.

The Kangaroos have defeated the Warriors in both previous match ups this season: a 40-32 win in Round 3 and a 28-22 win in Round 8.

Kangaroos coach, former St George Illawarra Dragons and Brisbane Broncos player Aaron Gorrell, has again named himself at hooker. Former Canberra Raiders forward and Warriors coach Troy Thompson lines up against Gorrell from the sidelines.

There's a number of former Canberra Raiders and up and comers featuring in the match... the likes of Brent Crisp, Tre Williams and Kody Parsons for the Kangaroos and Mark Appleton, Connor Brebner and Harry Whatman for the Warriors.

The Greenhouse will be covering the match with live scores on @CanberraCup on Twitter and half and full time updates here in this thread. We will also have pics from Seiffert on @CanberraCup and on The Greenhouse Instagram: www.instagram.com/TheGHRaiders.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Kangaroos' Brent Crisp doing it for pop 'Bluey'

Queanbeyan Kangaroos five-eighth Brent Crisp hopes the weather is good on Sunday. Not because the ball would be easier to catch, but because it would mean his grandfather could watch him run out for the club he helped build in a Canberra Raiders Cup grand final.

"Obviously, with pop not having the best health at the moment it sort of seemed a fitting time to go back to a club where he had a pretty big involvement."

Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen Warriors Bobby Roberts inspiring 'the fat kids

Last year, West Belconnen Warriors five-eighth Bobby Roberts was playing reserve grade. Now Roberts is the Canberra Raiders Cup's best player and he has the Les McIntyre Medal to prove it leading into the grand final against Queanbeyan Kangaroos on Sunday.

Roberts said the medal around his neck was one "for all the kids that have been called fat [and] told [you're] no good".

Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final: West Belconnen Warriors are 2016 Premiers

Image

Underdogs the West Belconnen Warriors have taken the Canberra Raiders Cup in a sensational finish to the 2016 Grand Final at Seiffert Oval this afternoon.

The Warriors defeated the minor premiers, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, inside the last two minutes, thanks to a Bobby Roberts penalty goal - after Kangaroos centre Ryan O'Sullivan was ruled to have shoulder charged Warriors half Cody Wynnik.

The penalty was awarded 30 metres from the posts, right in front, and the Les McIntyre Medallist Roberts made no mistake.

The Warriors looked to be down for the count at half time, trailing by 12 points. But the tenacious Warriors never gave up and kept coming back in the second half, and eventually prevailed 26-24.

The Kangaroos had been undefeated since Round 2 of the season, and were on a 16 game winning streak. They need to stretch it to 17, but couldn't quite make it.

The Warriors went to an early 6-0 lead after hooker Sam Finnegan went over under the posts in the seventh minute. But the Kangaroos quickly hit back, with a try to Jarred Pearce just a few minutes later. And when the Roos' Kody Parsons scored a four pointer in the 15th minute, it looked like the Queanbeyan team was about to turn on the cruise control.

The remainder of the half, however, turned into a grind, with the Kangaroos frustrated by penalties for their own ill discipline and by their own errors.

It looked like the teams would go to the break at 12-6, but the Kangaroos produced an amazing try to Tre Williams on the last play of the first half. As the hooter sounded, Bryan Cronan chased a high kick and somehow was able to bat back the ball, just when it looked certain to be too long - allowing Williams to plant it just inside the dead ball line.

Things looked grim for the Warriors at 18-6, but their supporters on the hill were not daunted, bringing out a Viking Clap during the half time break.

The Warriors finally broke through again in the 52nd minute, with a try to Tevita Aroha Tuinauvai, on the back of a 40/20 kick. And 10 minutes later a try to Warriors fullback Ryan McQueen saw the teams draw level at 18 apiece.

The momentum halted for the Warriors when the Roos' Troy Whiley gave the maroon and whites a 24-18 lead in the 69th minute. It looked like the minor premiers would reassert control. But then an error from the Roos, a dropped bomb, saw the man of the match Tevita Aroha Tuinavai go over for his second try in the 74th minute - and deliver a 24-24 scoreline.

With just two minutes remaining, the Kangaroos put Brent Crisp in position to take a shot at field goal, but it was wide. And then things went awry for the Kangaroos with just one minute on the clock.

It was a stunning result for a Warriors team that finished third at the end of the regular competition - and a great victory for former Raider, Troy Thompson, in his first year as a coach.

After a nine year wait, the West Belconnen Warriors are Canberra Raiders Cup champions tonight.
