The 2018 Greenhouse Team - Hooker

As usual in the off season, we're conducting a series of polls to determine The Greenhouse's view on the strongest Canberra Raiders starting line up for the coming year.

Josh Hodgson has done his knee for the first roughly 20 rounds, and they are some boots to fill! Ricky Stuart is running more try outs for the role than the Raiderettes ever had and he is keeping his cards close to his chest. So who do we think can fill the role of starting hooker?

Blake Austin
Is Blake the answer to our prayers? Will he sparkle and create more from the middle? Would the No. 9 give him the licence to thrill?

Luke Bateman

Are the rumours true? Or is this a huge mistake? Is Luke really a No. 9 in lock's clothes? Would this be a master stroke or a kindergarten artwork created by Ricky? Has Luke been keeping a secret skill from us all?

Craig Garvey

The Dogs let him go, said he wasn't up to scratch, but was it the Dogs who were the problem? Did they not know how to develop his skills? Were they rubbing the genie lamp with steel wool whereas Ricky has the right polishing cloth to make the genie appear?

Elliott Whitehead

Mr Versatility, we have seen him in the halves, we have seen him on the edge could we see him with his head in a scrum?

Siliva Havili

Is Havili our secret weapon? Is he the sparkling gemstone Ricky will uncover, the Clay Priest of 2018? Is he the Alex de Minaur of the Raiders? Will what he learned in the World Cup translate well with the Raiders and NRL standard matches?

You know the drill, you have one vote in this poll. If I have forgotten anyone let me know.

Tbh, Hodgson would probably still be our best hooking option.

I know, it was meant to be a joke that Hodgo on one leg would probably still outperform the rest of them

It has to be Garvey or Havili..

And they have one damn trial to impress.

The one to miss out will be at Mounties.

You don't think they will both make the 17? I guess Austin or Williams could fill in?

No I don't think they'll both be in the 17.

Can't fit them all in. 3 forwards on the bench and probably Williams or Austin.

To be honest I've no idea what Stick is thinking but I can't see Garvey and Havili both in the 17.

All i know is Garvey and Havili aren't 80 min players...We will need another hooker on the bench imo

Hodgson injury should change our entire attacking gameplan. We have a great back three ( and BJ) who get us on the front foot early in the sets. I think we then need an up tempo game where our hooker jumps out to engage the markers and send our big men into the space behind and attempt to get a quick play the ball. This will tighten up the A defenders and allow us to hit Sezer out the back so we can shift the ball early and take advantage of the compressed defence.

This should be relatively simple for either Garvey or Havilli. I think Garvey is the better defender so I would start with him.

Garvey. Did okay in limited stints at the Dogs. Might have been mentioned elsewhere previously but I heard Ricky was not impressed with the condition Havili turned up to training in.

The success of this position will make or break our season.

Have no evidence but I believe that Garvey played the full match for the Dogs at least twice and knocked up 60+ tackles both times. So I voted for him, all we need is an 80 minute tackling machine and then if Sezer and Austin and then Williams don't cut it at least we'll know what the problem is. A process of elimination really.

Personally I'd have Garvey start and Sam on the bench. Then if there's an issue with Garvey you can put Sam at 9, or Austin to DH, and see what happens.
