Radical idea that could save Raiders season

Blake Austin: The radical halves switch that could save Canberra Raiders season

THERE’S always a bit of a sinking feeling when you hear a player has torn their anterior cruciate ligament. And when it’s someone as important to our club as Josh Hodgson, the impact can be devastating. And that may mean either Aidan Sezer or I are asked to jump into hooker at some point during the season. And if Ricky asks, I’ll do it. I’ve played a bit of hooker before and I’m always prepared to do whatever I need to do to help this team win.

And here I was expecting the radical idea was to be Bateman at hooker!

Im not sure it solves our problems but im not sure it wouldnt either. It'll definitely be worth considering if none of the hookers make that position their own.

Williams is a better player than the current hooking options, so if you're trying to just fill the team with your best available players, that's the way to do it. It would have to be 6. Sezer 7. Williams 9. Austin and Garvey/whoever @ #14.

The worry is how Austin would hold up at hooker defensively... part of me thinks the extra workload would exhaust him and he'd be targeted in the middle, but the other part of me thinks because of number of bodies in the middle, his decision making issues could be mitigated

The idea of having Austin #14 filling in at hooker doesn't disgust me.

We have to try something after all.

I be happy with...
6. Sezer
7. Williams
9. Garvey
14. Austin

He's a 5/8, and he's been playing there for 3 years.. Why would he even put his hand up as an option?
Makes me think he knows his position in the team is under threat or something.

Form all our halves I'd say Sezer would most like make a successful transition to hooker. Best front on defender of the 3. Accurate passer and not afraid to take a hit up if needed.

Blake is a great ball runner so prefer to keep him around the edges. Williams is more the classic halfback organiser and the physicality of playing in the middle would tester him.

I’d be happy for the move but only if the other options aren’t working

1. Wighton
6. Austin
7. Sezer
9. Garvey / Havili

14. Havili / Garvey / Williams

14. Williams 15. Soliola 16. Knight 17. Gubb

Concentrate on the process and the result will take care of itself...

TBH I don't think it really matters who out of Sezer or Williams wears the 7, its just that the 7 has been Sezer's jersey number since he arrived. I also don't think it matters who you say is playing 5/8 and who is playing halfback. These days they are much the same.

There's no draft to aim for first pick
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Lock it in. Austin will start the season at hooker. Can’t see a player putting this out in the media if it’s not happening.

We will miss his speed and his show and go, but I guess his support play will be good in the middle, the question is will he be up to it defensively??

Agree with all of this 100%.

It almost has to happen imo. You can’t have **** Havili and Garvey in first grade and Williams in reserves. You just can’t.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

I’m not sure Austin is a starting hooker but he could definitely play a role off the bench, the fact he’s been a massive flop at 5/8 the last 2 years would also make you more willing to give it a crack. I also think our attacking structure and the opportunities for our outside backs are probably improved with a Sezer/Williams halves combo rather than Sezer/Austin

Agree with all of this NR. The number 9 handles the ball more than anyone else in the side so the first skill they need is to be a good passer of the football to both sides. Closely followed by defensive prowess. Ability to read the play and knowing when to run is also a required skill and finally imo, a sound kicking game.

If ever there is a time to play multiple trial games it is when the first choice hooker is out and the side is searching for the next best player in that position. That is where the Raiders find themselves before the start of season 2018.

Rather than convert Austin to play in the 9, how about playing with a 6 forward rotation, with the 9 simply being a "jersey" on the field from a defensive perspective.

In attack, either Austin or Williams to play the dummy half role, with Sezer and Whitehead sharing the 1st receiver role on either side of the ruck. This would also give seser the opportunity to run the team, something he has been wanting to, but so far, been unable to.

Over the years, centre of the ruck has been an issue defensively, and I'm concerned that Austin playing 9 defensively would exacerbate the defensive issues, especially as fatigue sets in.
To all the people with telekinetic powers...please raise my hand.
