Brett Kimmorley tips Canberra Raiders to struggle in 2018

13th Canberra Raiders

The Raiders are in big trouble in 2018 with hooker Josh Hodgson ruled out for most of the season after doing his ACL in England's World Cup semifinal victory. He is a huge part of their team and they will really struggle, with big question marks also hanging over their halves. I also think they will suffer from being too big, as league moves to being a more mobile game. They were very inconsistent last year and suffered a lot from poor discipline, and without Hodgson they'll lack direction.

It's hard to take him seriously. whenever he writes it seems like he's holding a grudge

Yep I would say hes spot on. Best player out for most of the season and terrible recruitment. Big questions over our halves and a highly inconsistent fullback. Our spine is suspect.

Lack direction without Hodgson? What direction did he give us last year? He overplayed his hand more often than not.

If they can get clearly define what roles Sezer and Austin are to play and execute that I don’t see how we will be that worse off considering the rest of our team.

I am an optimist though.

We still have a top 8 squad without Hodgo provided we start playing like a team and giving a **** as individuals.

Not too outrageous to predict that a side missing arguably their best player for the majority of the season will drop 3 spots on the ladder from the previous year.

Aaron Woods has the fastest play the ball in the game? I would say play-the-ball-speed is Woods' weakness.

Also, I hate the word "system" when it is used in a rugby league context.

Garvey is no Hodgson but he will fill in nicely. I think having Sam back will keep our halves honest also. Anything less than top 8 would be disappointing.

You don't think wood's ruck defence is his biggest weakness?

His ruck defence is poor for sure. He has a few flaws in his game.

with our draw we should be aiming for the top 4.

honestly the way our hooker/halves combined last season, hodgson being out is a blessing in disguise, great opportunity for sezer to stand up and austin to get a bit more ball in his hands.

In 2017 Nth Qld made it to 8th place by scoring 91 points less than us but also having 54 fewer points scored against them. They then pushed on to make the Grand Final.

The message for the Raiders is clear. Get your defensive house in order and you can make the 8. Hodgo or no Hodgo. The genuinely competitive sides are those with the best defenses. There has to be a vast improvement in this area for us to get to the finals. We were 10th worst defensive side this year and that was our ladder position. Winners of the comp have been Top 5 defensive sides over the past decade as were both Grand Finalists this year. These sides applied themselves better to their structures and scrambled better. The result is their fans were still watching their team at the end of the season and we were not.

Noddy is entitled to his opinion. I'd say it's supported by most in the NRL. But if we get our defense right, we'll make the 8. Over to you Sticky and the 17 in green each week.

Remember when this team made the finals in 2008 after Carney got sacked?

1. David MILNE
2. Colin BEST
3. Adrian PURTELL
4. Joel MONAGHAN
5. Justin CARNEY
6. Terry CAMPESE
7. Marc HERBERT
8. Troy THOMPSON
9. Ryan HINCHCLIFFE
10. Dane TILSE
11. Marshall CHALK
12. Joe PICKER
13. Alan TONGUE (c)

14. Ben JONES
15. Trevor THURLING
17. Glen BUTTRISS
21. Tom LEAROYD-LAHRS

Our current squad absolutely craps all over this one, with or without Hodgson. If they can't even make the finals, the coach dead set has to go.

Excepting Campo, that spine in 2008 are borderline reserve graders. We've got the Turtle playing in the centres...and that second row. Wow.

Campo carried us to the finals that year on the back of an amazing back half of the year, along with Best. We'll need similar super hot runs of form to do the same thing this season

Thank God Dusty, I appreciate your well wishes.

I only wished for three things this Xmas and it’s looking very promising after your post.

1. Australia to win the Ashes.

2. Lurker to tip us to finish 6th.

3. World peace.

Following your news, the third one is pretty much locked in now.

The only way I could conceivably think it wouldn’t happen would be a strange call or unexpected action by a powerful person in a White House.

Here’s why the Canberra Raiders will compete for the spoon next season

Look away Raiders fans. It was only last year when the Viking clap was booming around the Nation’s Capital as a sniff of a premiership was in the brisk Canberra air. Crucial Edrick Lee mistakes all but cost them their first grand final appearance since 1994.

Fast forward to the end of 2017 and the future is bleak in the Nation’s Capital. Many ‘experts’ gazed into their crystal ball for 2017 and saw the Raiders painting ANZ stadium green come October first. This was not the outcome as Ricky Stuart’s men failed to make the top eight in a very lacklustre season. With a very similar team line-up to their 2016 squad, you wouldn’t raise many eye-brows in saying that the Raiders can compete for the title in 2018, however I believe the decline will only continue.
