The 2018 Greenhouse Team - Halfback

Image

As usual in the off season, we're conducting a series of polls to determine The Greenhouse's view on the strongest Canberra Raiders starting line up for the coming year. This time last season the team was so settled I could easily predict the results... not so sure this year! So who is the best option at half for this year?

Aidan Sezer

Aidan didn't get that call from Laurie he was after, will this be the season he ups his game and catches Freddy's attention? Was last year a bit of a blip on Aidan's career or as Gough Whitlam might have said is it "time for a change"?

Sam Williams
Sammy is back!!! Is Sammy our Superman flying in everytime we need a boost? With his baby sweet looks can he be the one to bamboozle the opposition?

Ready, steady, vote!

You have ONE vote in this poll and you can change your vote. If a player you want selected is not in the poll, simply list their name in the thread. If a player is listed, you MUST vote in the poll for your vote to count.

Sezer all day every day.

Sam is a good Back up, but he's a terrible defender.

Having said that, I'd experiment with him at 6 and Austin at 9 for a while, as the old Baptiste interchange.

Sam @ 14, on for Garvey or whoever but Austin goes to 9.

Will either of these players be available for 5/8 as well? If yes, I vote Sezer

I think both Austin and Sezer are playing for extension past this season.

I think it's great Sam is back in green and he'll push for a spot in our halves.

I'll never forget the "green patch" he had back a few years ago now and I'm always comfortable with him in our side.

I think Stick will go with Sezer and Austin but if things look wobbly early Sam steps in..

There is a decision to be made when you choose between Sezer and Sam that comes back to their defensive capabilities. Sezer is the more solid player in both attack and defence, Sam is more the player you hope can consistently cause more points to be scored by us than he allows the opposition to score.

Sam kicks field goals.

And I've kicked more than Sezer...

Sezer will start in the 7 I reckon but Sam is awaiting.

C’mon PJ if you throw that comment out you know someone is going to fact check it.

Sam Williams has 2 Field goals in 70 NRL games
Aiden Seazer has 5 in 119 NRL games

I believe those 2 should be our starting halves, with Austin spending time at 9 and/or lock as the utility.

Ive gone Sezer, but only because the 7 has been his since arriving. I dont care which number these 2 where, just that they are in the 6 and 7.

Not so much contract yr theory (although that may be the case too) but he will have control of the team from round 1 - well hopefully he takes control

I think with Hodgo's injury our strongest side has Williams and Sezer in the halves with Austin at #14. I don't give a fig what numbers they wear but for the sake of argument I will have Sezer in the 7.

I was watching the 1989 semi final against the Panthers on Fox the other day... bring back the higher numbers! Put Sammy in number 47!!!!

It's kind of hard when there is no under 23's or reserve grade. The best you can hope for these days is to have a half back wearing #20.

I love Sam Williams, but with Hodgo out I'm hoping Sezer will kill it next season. Stuart will throw him the keys to the car @7 and I reckon he'll thrive.

However, if he chokes under pressure, I'm more than happy with Sam in the role. I'm kinda expecting these two to be our halves pairing at some point during the season.

PJ, Sam is reasonable but not better than Sezer.

You're former military right? Surely with Sezer you can see poor management? He is getting cooked by the ruperts

Yeah dub I get it..

I spose I'm comparing what Sam did a few years ago to what Sezer has achieved in green thus far. Sezers last 8-10 rnds of 2017 was very good and I'd like to think he'll get even better again.

I'm pretty sure we will start with Sezer/Austin, but I have a feeling that it will be less than about ten rounds before we see Williams/Sezer with Austin at 14. And that would be better - when the team is functioning smoothly, Austin is a luxury player, when it's not, he's a liability. Sam on the right can have Tapine defending with him (oh crap that puts responsibility on Joey too), but it puts Sezer back on the left where the whole team gel was better.

So I voted Sam.

Hate to say it.

But I think this year might prove or disprove the adage that Ricky is a halves killer.

No matter who is 7, they'll never proposer under Rick.

Hope I'm wrong.

The 2018 Greenhouse Team - Halfback

Post by RTW » January 7, 2018, 7:33 pm

Whilst I like Sam a lot of better judges then me don’t. The bloke has been forced down the second chance lane of Super League twice and no teams have really come knocking.

Which got me thinking about players who have managed to have a stint in the Super League and then successfully return to NRL. A number of forwards come to mine eg Soliola but very few spine players ever go down that route.

Soward played a couple of games for London Broncos and then came back successfully at Penrith but he essentially went their on a working holiday.

Can anyone think of any spine players who have been thrown on the scrap heap (aka Super League) and been able to return a better player?

I think we can blame Matt Orford for the problems Sammy has had.

He most likely came into first grade too soon and with way too much pressure on him, and wasn't at the Raiders during the best time when it came to strength and conditioning, he does seem to be getting bigger and stronger now with our current footy department.

Let's not forget he isnt that old!

He is nearly 27. That is beyond old for a halfback who has not established a regular starting role.
