Fittler says Cotric the pick of NRL left wingers

Post by greeneyed » January 1, 2018, 6:19 pm

NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler says Canberra Raiders' Nick Cotric pick of NRL left wingers

There's a job vacancy on the NSW Blues left wing and Canberra Raiders young gun Nick Cotric is perfectly placed to fill it after new Blues coach Brad Fittler said he was the pick of the NRL's left flyers this year.

"I can't see why not. He was most probably the pick of the left wingers last year in the competition," he said. "It was no fluke he won rookie of the year, but people are going to watch him a lot more and there'll be more focus on him. It's about him just to keep improving."

Would be great to see him picked but I think he's behind Mansour and Turbo in the pecking order.

He's got a bit more size than Mansour, which usually counts in your favour for origin (not that I always agree with it). Turbo is a fullback, but I'm not sure that will guarantee automatic selection in the backline anymore under Freddie. He might want to simplify a bit & go back to just picking the best bloke in the position.

To be honest I think we may see Teddy drop out of the side if his form doesn’t pick up at the start of next season. He looked pretty average last year, particularly toward the end. Potential for Turbo to be fullback and Cotric to be left wing. Mansour on the right perhaps. Ideally Fittler stops this trend of playing people out of position ie fullbacks in the centres.

Canterbury winger Brett Morris played on the left wing for the Blues in all three Origins, but he retired from representative football earlier this year.

Pretty early in the year to make that call, was it his New Year resolution?

Think you're right. I didn't really see how well or poorly Mansour recovered from his injury though.

Also worth noting Fitler selected 'Addo Carr' in his Blues side for last series, but that was with an injured Mansour and Cotric only half a season into his career.

Fitler won't be scared to pick a young player though.

They will find room for Turbo in the team probably in Haynes centre spot.
Mansour just needs to stay injury free to get one Wing position.

For some reason they always seem to find a spot for Dugan and Ferguson and unfortunately I can’t see that changing.

So I can’t see Cotric, Croker or Wighton getting a look in next year.

Ado-Carr is not the type of player that NSW pick it is hard to see him ever gaining a jersey.

This is the side selected for the last State of Origin game

New South Wales Blues side for State of Origin Game 3
1. James Tedesco, 2. Brett Morris, 3. Josh Dugan, 4. Jarryd Hayne, 5. Blake Ferguson, 6. James Maloney, 7. Mitchell Pearce, 8. Aaron Woods, 9. Nathan Peats, 10. Andrew Fifita, 11. Boyd Cordner (c), 12. Josh Jackson, 13. Tyson Frizell.

Interchange: 14. David Klemmer, 15. Wade Graham, 16. Jake Trbojevic, 17. Jack Bird.

The other players who I think are the best chance of pushing their way into a Fitler coached team are
T. Trbojevic
RCG
McClean
Mansour
Cotric
Crighton
Moylan
Moses
Cleary
Jnr Paulo

The front row and bench rotation choices are going to be very interesting.

Woods, Fifita and Klemmer have been part of the setup for a while now and J Trbojevic in my opinion was great last year. On top of that RCG and McLean made the World Cup squad.

Every man and his dog will argue to leave Woods out of the team but he just seems to keep getting picked.

I’m not sure on Fifita he lacks consistency and discipline but can be a game changer if he fires.

Campbell-Gillard, Vaughan, Cordner, Graham, J Turbo, Frizzel, Klemmer and Brown would be my choices for the big men.

I would also like to make a case for King Gutho to be the bench utility

Wighton?! If he ever gets a "look in" NSW have massive problems, and all eligible outside backs must have come down with a horrific virus or injury all at the same time. With his terrible handling, support play, bomb defusal, positioning, try scoring ability, etc, he will never play origin.

I can't believe it's hard to see Addo-Carr ever gaining a jersey, despite having nowhere near the amount of flaws Wighton does. Addo-Carr is a weapon.

The anti-Wighton posts will continue. However, I thought you were suggesting Wighton as if he should be considered, not just commenting on Freddy's suggestion. For that I apologise.

What the coach says now is largely irrelevant. Loz used to name 100 players as potential players and then picked duds. I hope Fittler is different but I'll wait and see.

All good, cheers for the apology. For what it is worth I don’t think he is anywhere near Origin but I do see plenty of upsides in his game.

My biggest gripe about Wighton is that we would be paying him massive overs based on “potential” that a lot of pundits talk about. But it is clear that the vast majority of our squad are on overs!

IMO none of our players have really deserved to be picked for a while now.

depends what your criteria is, I would say some of our boys are ahead of a few nif nafs that got selected this year

Junior beats woods/josh jackson/fifita
Jack beats Tedescos current form (not saying jack is in brilliant form)
Toots beats fergos current form

and the guy playing reserve grade for the Woden Rams is tougher than Dugan

and thats just off the top of my head

If you are asking are they origin quality compared to the likes of sticky and friends no they arent

I thought Dugan played quite well in the World cup and I'm certainly no fan of the guy. Maybe with a different coach on last year's form Wighton would have spent time at Mounties.
Agree on Paulo, and Vaughan deserves a chance. Both are better than Woods.

Dugan whether he played well or not in the World Cup does not deserve another call up to the Blues. They need to stamp out bad culture. The man can’t even catch the team bus on time

Cat certainly has her green glasses on regarding Jack, and thats coming from one of his greater defendants.

I think Vaughan earnt a chance last yr, and i had him ahead of Paulo, esp as he would rather represent Samoa than Australia. Because of this, id be very tempted to rule him out of Origin selection too. Its 1 thing to play for a minnow if your arent selected, a whole different story if you snub them outright.

Most of us have the same feelings about Duges and Toots, so hard to argue. I dont for a second believe he is 1 of the top 4, let alone top 2, centres in the NRL. BUT... those that matter disagree.

Yep. Was picked in the WC squad and never showed up. Went to straight to Samoan camp... i mean buffet, instead.

Teddy is the best FB in the comp, and was for most of last yr. It all fell away at the end.

Tommy Turbo had a great middle period, and reasonable end.

RTS was hampered by teammates mostly, but also niggling injuries.

Slater had a phenominal WC, but didnt really come alive until the last month and through the finals.

18 Stars of 2018 | Nick Cotric

Presented with an NRL debut to start the 2017 season, boom Raiders winger Nick Cotric grabbed a first-grade berth at Canberra with both hands. Heading into the new year, he’s not letting it slide.

“Growing up as a kid I always wanted to play for the Raiders. I still pinch myself every day. I can’t believe how quick it’s gone, this first season has gone so fast. I learned heaps from that year, and I’m still learning now."
