The 2018 Greenhouse Team - Five eighth

Image

As usual in the off season, we're conducting a series of polls to determine The Greenhouse's view on the strongest Canberra Raiders starting line up for the coming year. Who do we think will be part of the dream team, the Ying to Aidan's Yang? The Sonny to Aidan's Cher? The Scooby to Aiden's Shaggy? Get the idea? :P

Blake Austin

Well Blake's form last season was a bit of a mixed bag. Was it a strange version of second year syndrome, just not in his second year? Does he just need a simple hairstyle? We know he can play well but is Blake the oil to Aidan's water? Putting it simply does Blake look the goods for No. 6?

Sam Williams
Sammy is back (again)! Is Sammy the best option at No. 6? Does he provide the baritone tones that complement Aidan's tenor notes? Is Sammy our B2 to go with Aidan's B1? Will Sammy provide the harmony we missed last season?

Ready, steady, vote!

You have ONE vote in this poll and you can change your vote. If a player you want selected is not in the poll, simply list their name in the thread. If a player is listed, you MUST vote in the poll for your vote to count.

Id like Sammy and Sezer as the halves. While Austin can change a game with some big stepping or support play, our greatest attacking strength is our edge forwards and outside backs. Having 2 halves that can get it out to them with quality ball seems our best chance IMO.

firstly I voted for Sammy :)

but Matt do you want to put your hand up to be the one that tells Blake he is on the bench? I'm sure Ricky is looking for volunteers ;)

I'm thinking Blake will be.

He's the incumbent.

He was promised upon signing that 6 was his.

However.

I think Sam will be 14, and will come on as 6 with Austin going to 9.

We'll see how effective that is.

Blake still has an important job within the team.

Picking up Raiders fans on game day...

Look I just think with our current situation(no Hodgo)Sam should get a start at #6 or #7.

It will all be sweet, they've had the toughest pre season ever..

Williams and Sezer are both better ball players, kickers and organisers than Austin and that is what we are going to need while Hodgo is out. Austin can come off the bench.

I've voted for Williams, although in reality he'd be my 7 and Sezer would be my 6.

Does a number really make a difference these days? 1st and 2nd receiver isn't really a thing, as split halves still seem to be the norm. However, it seems to be making a comeback.

I love Sammy but I feel like he's getting votes based on the hope he'll have a season playing at the level of his best handful of games and Blake isn't getting votes based on his last season.

Sammy's best was great but so was Austin's - and it lasted a whole season. Sammy's never produced that type of consistency.

I acknowledge Austin struggled big time last year but I can't forget how regularly Sammy had horrendous defensive games coupled with games where he went totally missing. Those who might say he can't be worse than Austin 2017 don't remember when he was.

Williams is a great recruit. He will push Sezer and Austin, and be one of the best fill-in halves in the comp when injury hits. But he isn't a starting NRL half.

And no-one else enjoyed the video ;(

I think we all got nervous after last season and sammy is our kevin rudd

We all enjoyed the stability of howard but wondered what else was out there , is the grass greener so we voted for rudd; a monkey would have won that year!

That's a very good point, actually. Austin at his best was Dally M five-eighth of the year, Sammy Williams has never got close to those heights.

I guess I am a little guilty of this myself with my vote.

Krudd almost singlehandedly destroyed this country. It hasn't been the same since.

3 sacked PMs in a bloody row, and now we have this Muppet.

Abbot & Turnbull are far far worse PMs. Rudd led us through the GFC with very limited effects. Rudd was the first PM to apologise for the stolen generation. In contrast to Turnbull & Abbott who legalised SSM in the worst way possible and Stopped the boats.

If you’re talking about the way he undermined the Gillard Government, I will not argue with you there (though it was a stupid, foolish move to axe Rudd). But Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister was one of the best PMs we have ever had

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

I don't think Kevin Rudd is anywhere close to one of the best PMs we've had, but he's certainly better than Abbott or Turnbull. Those two have barely had a signature achievement between them - which seems kinda standard for Liberal governments.

As for the topic question, Blake has to be given the chance.

That's absurd.

He very competently dealt with the GFC, then fell into a massive hole. Not even his own side - even those who supported him at the time - have a positive thing to say about him.

Comparing him favourably to the brilliantly reformist governments in the Hawke / Keating era is just ignorant.
