What would you like to see come back in the NRL?

Post by cat » January 6, 2018, 4:47 pm

what I miss about the old days include:

- post try celebrations
- creative half time entertainment, (the giant football!!)
-likable players outside of the raiders
- bigger shorts on the players
- attacking games from most teams (so many games get boring!)

Raiders premierships

Edit - my mistake, the topic says NRL not rugby league so my answer can’t “come back”... [emoji31]

within reason because its better then them slapping each other with their handbags like they do today

Also think getting rid of the biff changed the way players sledged on the field, before it was funny, bit personal but not tasty

Now that you can't punch its seems to be more racial, homophobic, personal etc

1- the biff - but with rules, two guys both have to want to go at it, no 3rd man in. Both will sit in the bin for 10 mins anyway

2- Western Reds

Ad-lib football and referees who call forward passes.

Forward passes is a great one. How about lopsided penalty counts too! And the sin bin.

would love to see a game reffed by someone who sees black/white no grey

so every rule is reffed not just the ones our friend archer wants,

curious to see what the ladder would look like

Apart from the Raiders winning more games not much. The product now a days is much better than what it was in the 80's and 90's.

If anything I'd bring back Graham Hughes, thats someone which adds value to the game. Gould has Imo been a poison to the game.

In goal touchies instead of video ref. Captain's challenge only for video ref.

Referees that call the game as they see it, as opposed to trying to manage the game. Also, refs that are unafraid to blow their whistle in big games... I'm sick of finals and SOO being refereed differently to rounds 1-26.

Simple changes:

Refs call players by their number not their name and the players call the ref sir.

5 minute sin bin for repeat infractions and punching (defending yourself is not a sin binning offence)

Ingoal judges, one ref

Off the cuff football instead of the same boring structured stuff

Refs calling players by their numbers not name, players calling ref sir.

Unsure if it’s bringing it back, but split points if a game is tied.

I've seen the "call players by their numbers" argument hundreds of times and there's no substance to it. Constant monitoring by the NRL and even the ARL shows that the players don't pay attention and give a far prompter response when called by name. Possibly it's a gen Y thing. Or a millennial thing. But calling them by numbers is a bunch of cods, especially when the shirt number can change - why should the ref be trying to see shirt numbers?

And what I'd like to see is striking allowed at the play the ball. The man in possession might do it properly then.
Alternatively, allow the play the ball to be a roll between the legs and just give up. Choose one or the other.

Yeah put me down for post-try celebrations.
Innovative game plans also, like the wall, or splitting the scrum. I remember getting excited when we tried that in Furner’s first year, thinking this was the start of an awesome direction. Then, nothing

I have no idea why so many people want to go back to one ref. I thought the World Cup showed they missed a lot. I think the game has been far better with the pocket ref.

Same with the video ref. People have a ridiculous nostalgia for a time with consistent decisions everyone knows are wrong. Phil Gould has a lot to answer for on this front.

I’d keep the video ref, maybe as a challenge system like the Cricket. Two per half or something and if they are successful then you retain them.

The game is overly securitisation with 2 refs, two different interpretations, the game flows less. I really didn’t take notice of the World Cup with the refs cause a lot of poor quality teams and English referees.

I’d also like to see a draw or either golden try, promote better rugby League or at the very least a full 10 minutes each way.

Also the stripping rule is a farce, need to put the responsibility back on the ball carrier.

Teams stood far deeper under the 5 meter rule and found the time and ways to break down defenses. Yards would be harder to come by but teams aren't supposed to make 50-70 meters a set without a single shift like they do these days.

To score they just have to go watch the old tapes and work out they can't rely on the same three plays they do today. The 10 meter rule killed creative football and footballers outside a few spine players. It just lagged a bit while the older players were still around.

What would you like to see come back in the NRL?

Post by RTW » January 7, 2018, 2:38 pm

Mark me down as another for the 5 min sin bin.

I would use it for repeated infringements inside the twenty metre zone. We have to do something about teams just resetting the defensive line via penalties. Either that or if a penalty is given inside the twenty you get a shot at goal and play is restarted with a drop out.

I would also use the 5 min son bin for striking if you were punched and you hit back.
